1. Shooting a small buck.
If you choose to shoot a small buck in fear that the next guy will get it, fact is that he probably won't, that buck will live to grow another year, so shoot it because you want to not because the next guy might. Remember if you hold out you may just get a trophy.
2. To Pee or not to pee.
Human urine does not spook deer, in fact extensive research has proven that human urine in fact can actually attract them. The easiest thing to do would be to just pee off your stand or outside of your blind rather than tote a bottle around with you.
3. Best time of day to hunt.
Most hunters will tell you that hunting in the mid-day is a waste of time, truth is that bucks will wander around a food source in the morning and move towards eating in the afternoon. Remember too that if it is colder outside, that is usually better, so stay out all day to better your chances of bringing home a trophy.
4. Waiting on a better buck.
This may sound like a repeat of #1, but remember, everyone might tell you that they have seen trophy bucks in the area, but fact of the matter is if you see a 8 or 10 point and you feel that it is a great buck in your opinion, I would say take the shot, chances are a bigger and better is not headed your way.
5. The truth about a deers actions.
Just because a deer stomps and bobs does not necessarily mean it is going to bolt off. Many believe this to be true so they take the shot whether it is good or not. Truth is, just stay still and the deer just may settle down and give you a better shot.
6. Smart bucks and permanent structures.
Most believe that smart or aged bucks will avoid permanent structures. Well I must say that bucks are smart, so best if your blind or stand have been there for awhile, and chances are if will be "part of the landscape" after awhile.
7. Wind knowledge.
Just because the wind is blowing "the wrong way" at the parking spot does not necessarily mean that it is blowing the same direction at your stand or blind. If you find that is is wrong when you get there just do a quiet retreat and come check it out later.
8. Bleeding out your deer.
It's like pops told me, "when you kill it, you cut it". Truth is there is no reason to cut the deers throat and make a bloody mess, you may ruin a perfectly good mount. Also there is no reason to cut the tarsal glands off the rear legs, although the smell may make a great scent if you happen to be a lucky one with a second tag.
9. The deer and the moon.
Most believe that if there is a full moon, that bucks will be up all night in search for food, and not be out at all in the daytime, truth is that deer will probably lay low at dawn, but be really on the move during morning to mid-day, so be out so you don't miss out. 10. Sometimes less is more.
Most hunters feel that hunting in larger areas will better their chances, but in fact, remember you have to share large areas with crowds of other hunters. It's best if you can find a hunting area of 50 - 400 acres with a limit of hunters allowed. This tends to calm down the deer and give you a better edge and probability of scoring a kill. |
